TL;DR: Our #1 suitcase is the Quince Carry-On Hard Shell (21″). We took Quince carry-ons on a 10-day London / Paris / Disneyland trip with zero checked bags. TSA locks held, shells survived the overhead shuffle, wheels lived through cobblestones. Solgaard Carry On Closet is the specialty pick if you pack by hanging outfits. Hotel Collection wins if you want a built-in scale.
Prices (Nov 5 2026): Quince Carry-On $169.90, Quince Check-In $219.90, Solgaard Carry On Closet from $260, Hotel Collection about $278.96.
We do not collect suitcases for Instagram. We drag them through airports, hotels, and the kind of cobblestone courtyard that eats cheap spinner wheels for breakfast.
After Quince luggage survived our Europe trip (and after years of living with Solgaard’s Carry On Closet and Hotel Collection’s gadget bag), here are the suitcases we love enough to recommend out loud.

The short list
- #1 overall: Quince Carry-On Hard Shell Suitcase (21″)
- Best “closet in a suitcase”: Solgaard Carry On Closet
- Best gadget bag: Hotel Collection carry-on (built-in scale)
- Best checked bag from the same brand: Quince Expandable Check-In (27″)

What has to be true before a suitcase makes this list
Pretty shells are easy. Suitcases we love clear a shorter, meaner bar:
- Survives real airports (overhead bins, bag drops, sidewalks)
- Wheels that still spin after cobblestones or parking-garage pavement
- A lock situation that does not panic you at TSA
- Interior that packs for how humans actually pack, not for a catalog photo
- Value that does not require a second mortgage (or a clear reason if it does)
If a bag fails any of those, it does not get a love letter. It gets a shrug.
#1: Quince Carry-On Hard Shell Suitcase (21″)
This is the suitcase we love most. Not because it is the flashiest. Because it is the one we would buy again tomorrow.

We brought Quince carry-ons for the whole family on a 10-day London / Paris / Disneyland Paris trip. One bag per person. Zero checked bags. The TSA locks held. The polycarbonate shells took the overhead-bin shuffle without cracking. The spinner wheels survived cobblestone courtyards (barely, and with complaints from the wheels, but they made it).
Inside, the organization is actually usable. Compression straps do their job. It looks clean enough that nobody assumes you bought the “budget” bag, which is funny, because Quince pricing is the whole point.
Current price: $169.90 (live Quince.com Nov 5 2026). We described the Paris bags as roughly Away / Rimowa spec energy for a fraction of the price. Confirm the live number before publish.
What we were not fans of
Cobblestones will still make any hard-shell spinner feel dramatic. Soft-sided packs forgive rough ground better. And if you are a “hang every outfit like a tiny hotel closet” packer, Quince is a normal suitcase, not a Closet-in-a-box. That is a different tool (next section).
Bottom line: if you want one carry-on for trips that mix cities, parks, and “please do not check a bag,” start here.

More Quince context (polos, pants, cashmere, and the rest of what we tested): our Quince review. The Paris packing list that rode in these bags: what we actually wore in Paris.
Carry On Closet (Solgaard): the insert for outfit packers
Chip asked for this one on purpose. The Solgaard Carry On Closet is not trying to be Quince. It is a carry-on with a built-in hanging closet, so you pack outfits instead of stuffing a cube and praying.

We tested it on a Disney cruise and in real airports. The hang system is the whole product. If you fold and hang, it earns the premium. If you pack by stuffing, skip it and stay with Quince.
Honest negatives early: it is not cheap, and there is a learning curve. Solgaard backs it with a 10-year warranty. Full write-up: our Carry On Closet review.
How it sits next to Quince: Quince is the default suitcase we love. Carry On Closet is the specialty insert when the packing system matters more than the shell price.

Hotel Collection: when the bag does the math for you
Hotel Collection is the pick for travelers who have been blindsided by overweight fees one too many times. The built-in digital scale is the feature that earns its keep. Spinner wheels, TSA lock, polycarbonate shell, lifetime warranty story. Full review: Hotel Collection luggage review.

Price note: list vs sale moves around. $278.96 (live Hotel Collection Nov 5 2026). GPS tracking is Apple-only on the versions we covered, so Android folks should not buy it for that feature alone.

A feature-packed set of Luggage that is great... if you can get past the branding.
Same brand, bigger trip: Quince Expandable Check-In (27″)
When carry-on math fails (ski trip, two-week family loadout, “why did we pack that many shoes”), Quince’s expandable 27″ hard-shell check-in is the sibling we point people to. Expansion zipper for the “oops” packing day. Same spinner / TSA-lock vibe as the carry-on.

Price: $219.90 (live Quince.com Nov 5 2026). It is not the #1 pick on this page because most of our love affairs happen in the overhead bin. It is the right upgrade when you have to check.

Sum up
- Buy first: Quince Carry-On Hard Shell 21″. It is our #1.
- Buy if you hang outfits: Solgaard Carry On Closet (use the insert above).
- Buy if overweight fees haunt you: Hotel Collection with the scale.
- Buy if you must check: Quince Expandable Check-In 27″.

FAQ
What is the best suitcase you actually use?
The Quince Carry-On Hard Shell 21″. It is the bag we reached for on a 10-day Europe trip with no checked luggage, and it is the #1 pick on this list.
Is the Solgaard Carry On Closet worth it vs Quince?
Only if you pack by hanging outfits. Quince wins for most travelers on price and simplicity. Carry On Closet wins when the built-in closet is the feature you will actually use.
Do you recommend soft-sided or hard-shell?
Hard-shell for the Quince / Hotel Collection / Solgaard bags we love here. Soft-sided still wins for crush-into-a-trunk flexibility. Our tested favorites on this page are hard-shell.
Where can I see what you packed inside the Quince carry-on?
In our Paris carry-on wardrobe post. Ten days, three cities, one Quince bag each: what we actually wore.
