Winter is here and it is officially flannel weather for us dudes. As you know, we’re huge fans of Mizzen + Main (read our full Mizzen and Main Review). Now it’s time for a full Mizzen + Main Flannel Review.
Warm, but not too toasty. It's the perfect fall piece. They last for years, too.
What are Mizzen + Main Flannels?
If you read our full Mizzen + Main review, you know that we love Mizzen and Main. They are dress clothes that don’t feel like dress clothes. They are built with high-performance fabric more commonly found in athletic wear.
Mizzen + Main Flannels are no different. They are the perfect blend of performance, comfort and also warmth (for the colder weather). I would classify the Mizzen Flannels as a mid-weight flannel that has moisture-wicking. These aren’t the most heavy-duty flannels that you’ve ever seen, but they are not light either. I typically wear them once the weather gets below about 50 degrees.
In Colorado, in the winter, the weather can range from 70 degrees during the day to 20 degrees at night. This is a great shirt for the varying weather.
Mizzen and Main’s flannels are mostly Polyester but, it doesn’t feel like polyester. It has a much softer hand feel.
What are most other flannels made from?
I just assumed that Mizzen and Main’s flannels were polyester and something stretchy. I thought most other flannels were made of cotton. It turns out a good number of them are also polyester. According to Wikipedia, here’s what makes a flannel, a flannel:
Flannel is a soft woven fabric, of various fineness. Flannel was originally made from carded wool or worsted yarn, but is now often made from either wool, cotton, or synthetic fiber.
Wikipedia
For example, this Amazon Essentials Flannel is 100% cotton.
But this flannel shirt, which looks very similar, is 100% polyester.
Mizzen + Main Flannels: what we love
There are a couple of things we love about the flannels. The first is that they keep you warm – but not too warm. I’m pretty hot-blooded and overheat pretty easily. I don’t in Mizzen + Main Flannels. They keep me warm but not hot.
The other amazing thing is just how soft they feel. We’ll get to a negative in just a moment, but they all feel super comfortable.
They are also super easy to wash. Just follow our Mizzen and Main washing instructions and your clothes will be ready in no time. Some times, depending on how big the load is, my Mizzen and Main Flannels are 95% dry when I take them out of the washer – yes, you read that right – the washer.
What we don’t love about Mizzen + Main Flannels
Nothing’s perfect, right? I have one small bone to pick with their flannels: they all feel a little different.
Take this one, for example. It looks – and feels – like a classic Flannel.
You can see that this Flannel is 98% Polyester and 2% Spandex. The Spandex is what gives the shirt it’s stretch.
This is also one of Mizzen and Main’s flannels.
I believe they called this the City Performance Flannel. Not sure what the difference is here from a fabric standpoint, but you can tell the difference in the fabric. The first one is a very classic look and feel. The second one is more “smooth.” There’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s just not the same. I actually like them both.
This particular flannel was 63% Polyester, 33% Rayon and 4% Spandex.
Then you have other flannels, like this one (below) that are a good mix of the two – not as brushed but jot as smooth. I actually like every version that I have of the Mizzen + Main Flannels, but they are a little different.
This flannel has the same exact makeup but still “feels” a little different.
If you have any fears about buying one – don’t. They have great customer service and easy return policy.
What wear with Mizzen and Main Flannels
This is easy: I wear these flannels 99% of the time with Duer Jeans (read our Duer Review) and Cole Haan 2.Zerogrand Chukkas (read our full Zerogrand Review, too). It’s an easy look to pull off that is super comfortable. You look put together and fashionable at the same time.
I sometimes will also pair a Mizzen and Main Flannel with one of their Quarter-Zip pullovers. This is a super easy combo that goes well together. You get the comfort and stretch on both the flannel and the pullover.
Mizzen + Main Flannels: The final verdict
If you are looking for a great flannel that will last all season long, look no further than the Mizzen + Main Flannels. They are simply awesome.
