Meet the Charge Comfort 2

The Charge Comfort 2 takes where the Comfort 1 made its mark on the eBike world and took it to another level. The Comfort name even visually suggests incredibly leisurely rides of an everyday electric bike, doesn’t it?

Charge took the Comfort 1 and made it even better. They made two main improvements: they made the tires wider for more stability on bumpy roads and upgraded the larger rear rack weight capacity, so you can strap on your gear or carry a kiddo in a child seat without worry. The Comfort 2 has a max weight capacity of 55 pounds, in the rear rack.

While that’s not game-changing, it doesn’t allow you to add a Thule Kids seat to the back, too.

The Specifications – Fairly Standard Features

The Charge Comfort 2 has some pretty standard features found on other ebike. Let’s quickly highlight those before we dive into what makes the Comfort 2 Special.

250W Motor

While Charge calls this 250W Motor “Powerful,” that’s not exactly the words I would use to describe it. We’ve tested motors that peak at over 1000 Watts, which sounds like a lot. But you have to remember this eBike only weighs 55 Pounds WITH the battery.

The lighter weight makes the 250W more than adequate, but I wouldn’t consider it “powerful” by many standards. This helps minimize bike weight for the Comfort Electric Bike, in addition to other features like the new lightweight Alloy fork.

Thumb Throttle

The Charge Comfort 2 comes with a thumb throttle that powers the bike, so you can give yourself a little boost without having to worry about pedaling. This is great for those who want an easy ride but still want to get some exercise. This is slightly different than most other eBikes (most eBikes have a half twist throttle on the right handlebar).

Easy-to-understand LCD Display

The Charge comfort comes with a medium-sized LCD display that is easy to understand. The intelligent battery capacity indication is my favorite feature, as it tells you how much juice you have left in the tank. It also has a real-time speed indication and power assist level indication.

5 Different Levels of Pedal Assist

Of course, the Charge Comfort 2 comes with 5 different levels of pedal assist. This allows you to customize your ride to however you want it. If you want just a little boost, you can use level 1 or 2. Or, if you want a more powerful ride, you can crank it up to level 4 or 5.

Comfort Electric Bike Range: 50 Miles

Technically, as I’ve mentioned in other eBike reviews, most eBikes technically have an infinite range (or as far as your feet want to pedal). The Charge Comfort 2 has a battery range of about 50 miles, which is pretty standard for an eBike.

Of course, this all depends on how you’re riding the bike. If you’re using the throttle a lot, you’re going to drain the battery faster than if you’re using just pedal assist. You’ll also use more battery going up steeper hills, against the wind or hauling a lot of gear.

Where the Charge Comfort 2 eBike Stands Out

OK – now that we’ve talked about some of the standard features of the Comfort 2. Let’s talk about what makes this bike special.

They thought of everything.

Charge is made by the makers of Schwinn, Mongoose and other high-quality bike brands, so you know they know a thing or two about making bikes. And it shows with the Charge Comfort 2 eBike.

They’ve thought of everything – and that’s clear the second it arrives at your front door.

Easy to Assemble

Seriously, this little box on the Comfort e-bike really makes it easier. Charge bikes thought of everything!

The Charge eBike comes about 90% assembled and takes only 3 major steps to get set up and ready to ride. They’ve literally thought of everything.

The box it comes in has a QR code to scan and watch a video to assemble the bike. They’ve even included all the tools you need to put it together. It literally couldn’t be any easier.

By my favorite part of the assembly process is the simple box you use to hold the front wheel in place and get it on the front fork. This process is difficult in every other eBike assembly I’ve done. I usually end up flipping the bike upside down, but Charge thought of that too.

The box has a slot for the front wheel axle to go through so you can attach it while the bike is right side up. This made the process SO much easier and faster.

Rack-Mounted Battery

Comfort Electric Bike = Battery in the back, unusual in e-bike designs.

Charge also includes a rack-mounted battery on the Charge Comfort 2 eBike. This is great because it’s out of the way and doesn’t add any weight to the bike. Most other eBikes have the battery mounted on the down tube, which can make the bike front-heavy.

It also make the frame a 100% true step-through design. Getting on and off the bike is super easy.

The rack-mounted battery also makes it easier to remove and Charge separately from the bike. This is a great feature if you want to lock up your bike and take the battery with you to charge at work or inside. I find this design to be much easier to attach and remove than other eBikes (like even the Charge City – read our Charge City Review)

Fenders and Lights Included

The Charge Comfort 2 also comes with fenders and lights included. This is a great feature because it means you don’t have to spend any extra money to add these aftermarket items. And, they’re high-quality fenders and lights too.

Not all e-bike companies provide a rear light (or even rear fenders… or front fenders), so this is a great added bonus.

The Horn

Yes, the Comfort 2 has an electronic horn. Most other eBike have a crappy (and cheap bell), but the Charge Comfort 2 has a loud and proud electronic horn. This is great because it allows you to be heard in traffic, even when cars are around.

Like I said, Charge thought of everything here.

Lightweight – only 55 Pounds

Here’s a dirty little secret in the eBike work: many other manufacturers provide you the total weight of the bike without the battery. Sometimes the battery can weigh 10+ pounds.

Charge includes the battery weight in their advertised weight, so you know exactly what you’re getting. The Charge Comfort 2 only weighs 55 pounds – making it one of the lightest electric bikes on the market with throttle, pedal assist, and all the other features we’ve discussed.

This is a great feature because it’s easy to carry and move around – or even carry up a flight of stairs.

Easy to store

Folding handlebars make this a lot easier to store, for real!

Like other Charge eBike, the Comfort 2 has nifty foldable pedals and collapsable handlebars. The handlebar rotates 90 degrees in just a few seconds making it easy to store or transport your bike.

No drama

We mean this in the best way possible. There is zero… and we mean zero drama around the electric bike.

The pedal assist is subtle but works well and feels more like a gentle assist than other eBikes with an overly aggressive pedal assist or throttle.

Other eBikes can feel like they’re going to take off without you, but the Charge bikes have a smooth and steady ride that’s easy to control.

Expanded Cargo Capabilities

The Comfort 2 also has a larger rear rack to allow you to carry more cargo – or even a kiddo on a Thule Bike seat on the rear rack.

Charge really listened to their customers with this one because they increased the weight limit on the rack. This may not seem like a lot, but it really does make a difference when you’re carrying cargo.

What we didn’t care for

No eBike is perfect and the Comfort 2 is no different.

The Thumb Throttle

This is more of a personal preference, but I really don’t like the thumb throttle. I find it not as comfortable as a twist throttle.

I also think Thumb Throttles also appear cheaper than half-twist throttles. I’ve never had one break, but I just don’t like the feel or look as much.

The Display

No fancy display here on the Comfort.

The Charge Comfort 2 has a basic display that gets the job done, but it’s not as fancy as some of the other displays on other eBikes. It’s not a big deal to me, but it’s something to be aware of if you’re looking for a super high-tech display.

The Motor

Once again, for the right person, this eBike is perfect. But if you want to feel like you have superpowers and go zero to 20 MPH in a couple of seconds, this eBike isn’t for you.

I would prefer a little more power, but this isn’t a race bike and I’m not trying to win any eBike races. This is a comfort/commuter bike and it performs very well in that role.

The key for the battery

Once again, another super small thing, but in my Charge Comfort 2 YouTube Review, you’ll notice that I couldn’t find the key for the battery.

The good news is that you can insert the battery without the keys. However, if you hit a bump and don’t lock the battery, it can easily come out. No battery means the bike turns off completely. Of course, you can still pedal but it was frustrating after the 1st time.

It’s not a huge deal, but something to be aware of.

Charge Comfort 2: Who we would recommend it for

The Charge Comfort 2 knows EXACTLY who it is. It’s not trying to be something it’s not. It’s an excellent, no-fuss small cruiser in the very best way possible.

If you want an electric bike that’s easy to ride, easy to carry, and doesn’t require a lot of maintenance, the Charge Comfort 2 is a great option.

It’s also a great value. For under $2,000 you get a really well-made electric bike with all the features you need and none of the bells and whistles you don’t.

We would also recommend this eBike for someone who wants to use it for commuting or running errands around town. The expanded cargo capabilities make it easy to carry your belongings with you – or even strap a kiddo into a bike seat on the back.

The Charge Comfort 2 is also a great option for someone who wants an electric bike but doesn’t want the eBike to be the star of the show. If you’re looking for an electric bike that’s understated and will blend in with all the other bikes on the trail or street, this is a great option.

Charge Comfort 2 eBike: Who we would not recommend it for

This is a really easy review because it’s really clear who the Charge Comfort 2 eBike is NOT designed for.

If you want to go super fast and do your best Evel Knievel impersonation, stay far away from the Charge Comfort 2. This bike is not designed for speed demons.

The Charge Comfort 2 also isn’t the best option if you’re looking for an electric mountain bike. There are other Charge eBikes (like the Charge XC) that are better suited for off-road riding.

The Charge Comfort 2 is a great all-around electric bike, but it’s not the best at everything. If you’re looking for an electric cruiser, this is a great option. But if you’re looking for an electric race bike or an electric mountain bike, there are better options out there.
