Tree Dasher vs. Tree Runner: the quick answer

If you came here typing “tree dasher vs tree runner,” here is the short version.

The Tree Dasher is the running shoe. The Tree Runner is the casual everyday shoe. That is the whole difference in one line.

The names are confusing on purpose-by-accident. “Runner” sounds like the running shoe. It isn’t. The Dasher is.

One quick 2026 note before you shop: Allbirds renamed the line. The shoe you may know as the “Tree Dasher” is now sold as the Dasher, and the Tree Runner now shows up as the Tree Runner NZ. Same idea, new labels.

  • Buy the Tree Dasher / Dasher if: you actually run, jog, or want a cushier sole with a one-piece upper for workouts.
  • Buy the Tree Runner if: you want a light, breathable everyday sneaker for walking, errands, and travel.
  • Price (2026): the Tree Runner runs around $100. The Dasher runs around $140. The Dasher costs more because it’s built as a real running shoe.
  • Both: machine washable, made from eucalyptus tree fiber, can be worn with or without socks.

Mr. We Tried It’s pick for daily wear is the Tree Runner — he wears the grey pair constantly, even on bike rides with the kids in Colorado. If you’re chasing a mile time, that’s where the Dasher earns its keep. More detail on both further down.

The Best Allbirds: What do we even know?

This whole post started when Mrs. We Tried It had a friend reach out and ask which Allbirds she’d recommend. She just responded with this picture:

Allbirds shoe collection comparison
Just a couple of our Allbirds collection

The crazy part? That’s only part of them. We might have a problem.

Needless to say, we love Allbirds and tell everyone about them, but it can be a little overwhelming to pick a style. So let’s start with the basic split: Allbirds wool shoes (like the Wool Runner) or their tree shoes (like the Tree Runner). Let’s dive in.

Allbirds Wool vs. Tree: which material is the best Allbirds?

The main difference between Allbirds merino wool and Allbirds tree shoes is warmth. The tree shoes are lighter and more breathable, and they keep their shape better. The wool shoes are warmer.

You might be asking, “what about Allbirds Tree Runners vs. Wool Runners?” We’ll get there.

Allbirds insole comparison
Almost all Allbirds have wool insoles.

This is the first question to settle: wool or tree material?

First, how almost all Allbirds are the same: nearly all of them have some wool on the inside. Most have a wool insole. Wool is where Allbirds started, and you see it throughout the line.

They’re also all made from sustainable materials with a low carbon footprint, and they’re all machine washable. Read our Allbirds washing instructions.

Allbirds Merino Wool Shoes: What they are best for

Allbirds wool shoes (the Wool Runner, Mizzles, Wool Lounger, Wool Piper) are warmer than the tree shoes. They’re better for cooler climates and keep your foot warmer. Mrs. We Tried It loves the merino wool styles the most. She calls them her “kittens” because they’re soft and cuddly.

Allbirds Wool Runners in natural light
The OG, the original.

The wool shoes also look more “normal.” The tree shoes, on close inspection, don’t look quite as much like “real” shoes because of the perforated texture.

Did you know there are also eucalyptus sheets? Check out our Sijo Home Review for their sheets, also made with eucalyptus.

Allbirds Wool Shoes: Where they fall short

If wool shoes are great for cooler climates, they’re naturally less suited for warm ones. Merino wool is breathable, but not as breathable as the perforated tree material.

But here’s the real kicker on the wool shoes: the toe box. I didn’t even know what a toe box was until I got Allbirds and misspoke on a YouTube video (imagine that).

Allbirds toe box comparison

The toe box on the wool shoes tends to deflate over time. When you put the shoe on it’s far less noticeable, but it bugged a lot of people (just read the comments on this video). It’s a little noticeable on the Wool Runners and really noticeable on the Wool Loungers.

The Wool Runner 2: Fixing the Deflated Toe Box?

Allbirds Wool Runner 2 in Grey Light Grey

Enter the Allbirds Wool Runner 2.

Here’s the scoop: it got a real makeover — a sturdier toe and a cushier sole, a clear upgrade over the original. It still keeps the eco-friendly merino wool and sugarcane sole. If you want a sustainable, comfy, stylish sneaker, the Wool Runner 2 belongs near the top of your list.

This may make the Wool Runner a slightly better shoe than the Tree Runner, but I still like the breathability of the Tree Runner since I run hot.

Allbirds Tree Shoes: Where they shine

Allbirds Tree Runner shoes

This is where Allbirds’ lineup is smart: the shoes complement each other. Where the wool shoes run a little hot, the tree shoes run a little cool. They’re more breathable.

The toe box on the tree shoes also holds its shape a lot better than the wool shoes. Mr. We Tried It loves the tree shoes best for exactly that reason. Allbirds even calls the Tree Runner their “98% shoe” — good for 98% of the time.

As mentioned, they run a little cool. They also aren’t the most stable shoe in the world — especially the boat shoe. But boat shoes aren’t exactly known for stability, are they? They don’t even go over the ankle.

Allbirds Comparison: Which style is best?

This is where things get subjective. Let’s start with the easiest calls and work toward the hardest.

Allbirds Tree Dashers vs. Tree Runners

The main difference between the Tree Runners and the Tree Dashers: the Tree Dasher is a true running shoe. Don’t let the names fool you. The Runner is the casual shoe. The Dasher is the running shoe.

Allbirds Dasher review
Want a running shoe? From eucalyptus tree fiber to a castor-bean-oil sole, this is the best Allbirds for running.

This is a no-brainer: if you’re going to run, get the Tree Dasher (now sold as the Dasher). Read our full Tree Dasher Review to see how it holds up.

Honestly, I think Allbirds made a naming mistake early on. If they’d known they were going to build the Dasher, they probably would have named the casual shoe something other than “Runner.”

Tree Dasher vs. Tree Runner: Which is Best?

The main difference between the Tree Dasher and the Tree Runner is the design intent. The Tree Runner was built as a casual shoe. The Tree Dasher was built as a running shoe. The names are confusing, but that’s the truth.

(LEFT) Tree Dasher vs. Tree Runner (RIGHT)

Both are made from a similar tree material. But here’s how they differ:

Tree Dasher (now the Dasher)

✅ One-piece upper
✅ Dual-density SweetFoam midsole
✅ 7mm heel-to-toe drop
✅ Machine washable
✅ Wear with or without socks
✅ Castor-bean-oil sole
Around $140

Tree Runner

❌ Two-piece upper (body + tongue)
❌ Single-density SweetFoam midsole
✅ 15mm heel-to-toe drop
✅ Machine washable
✅ Wear with or without socks
✅ Light and breezy
Around $100

If you’re a serious runner, go with the Tree Dasher. Read our full Allbirds Tree Dasher Review.

Don’t worry — Allbirds has a generous return policy. You can return the shoes even after you’ve worn them, and they’re nice about it.

Allbirds Tree Dasher vs. Allbirds Wool Runner: which is best?

The Wool Runner is a great everyday shoe — not a running shoe. We’ll keep this short: for running, get the Tree Dasher. For everyday wear, we’d reach for the Wool Runner (or the Tree Runner if you run warm). More on wool vs. tree above.

Allbirds Tree Runners vs. Wool Runners

The main difference between the Wool Runner and the Tree Runner is the fabric. Wool keeps your feet warmer; the tree material lets the shoe breathe. Cold-weather pick: Wool Runner. Warm-weather pick: Tree Runner.

Best Allbirds for cooler climates: the Wool Runner

Allbirds Review - how do they hold up?

You can’t go wrong with the original — the Allbirds Wool Runner. The photo above shows how it ages, which honestly isn’t bad, especially since it’ll probably become your new favorite shoe.

You can wash them, and they’re insanely comfortable. Read more in our original Allbirds Review. As noted, the Wool Runner 2 may edge out the original here.

Best Allbirds for lounging: the Wool Lounger

Allbirds Wool Fluff shoes
Mrs. We Tried It loves the merino Wool Lounger over the Tree Loungers.

Another easy call: the Wool Lounger is the shoe that got Mrs. We Tried It hooked on Allbirds. There’s an even cozier version now — the Wool Fluffs.

The Wool Lounger has the same toe-box issue as the Wool Runner, but it’s perfect around the house or running to and from yoga.

Best Allbirds for warmer climates (or longer life): the Tree Runner

Allbirds Tree Runners
Allbirds Tree Runners — the eucalyptus tree fiber makes for a super light, breezy everyday sneaker.

This is Mr. We Tried It’s favorite. He wears the grey pair all the time. Even though it was cold in Colorado that day, he wore them on a bike ride with the kids.

The style isn’t quite as sharp as the Wool Runner, but it’s still pretty great. At around $100, it’s also the easier shoe to recommend on price.

Best Allbirds for rainy climates: the Mizzles

Here’s where the line gets a little confusing. “Mizzle” is Allbirds’ term for the style built for mist and drizzle (get it?). They aren’t fully waterproof, but they are water resistant.

Best Allbirds for the most fashion-forward person

This is the toughest call. For guys, we’d look at the high tops or the Allbirds boat shoes (the Tree Skippers).

Tree Skippers

Mr. We Tried It can’t pull off high tops, so it’s the Tree Skippers for him. They aren’t as stable as the high tops (no ankle support), but they made it through two days at Disneyland with zero problems.

Best Allbirds flats: the Tree Breezer

Allbirds Tree Breezer flat
Allbirds Tree Breezer — made with eucalyptus tree fiber, not recycled plastic bottles like Rothy’s.

Easy one, since there’s really one Allbirds flat — the Tree Breezer. It’s simple and comfortable. If you want washable flats, we also love Rothy’s (read our full Rothy’s review and our Rothy’s vs. Allbirds guide).

Allbirds Sustainability Efforts

Allbirds is built around keeping things green. They use natural materials like eucalyptus, sugarcane, and merino wool, and they publish carbon-footprint numbers on their products so you can see how a shoe was made.

The materials are sustainably sourced, and Allbirds works recycled content into laces and packaging. If a low-impact sneaker matters to you, that’s a real point in their favor.

Allbirds Return Policy

Allbirds’ return policy is as comfy as the shoes. You can try them for 30 days, and if you’re not happy, send them back for a refund — even if you’ve worn them around town. That’s a real safety net when you’re deciding between two similar styles.

Allbirds Sizing and Fit

Allbirds sizing usually runs true, though some people size up in the wool styles. Aim for room to wiggle your toes.

Tree Runners tend to feel a touch roomier, which is nice for wider feet. Wool Runners feel a bit snugger, which is part of why they feel so warm. If you can, walk around in them before you decide — motion tells you more than standing still.

Care and Maintenance of Allbirds Shoes

Caring for Allbirds is easy. Toss them in the washing machine with cold water and mild detergent, then air dry — don’t put them in the dryer. A quick brush of the sole knocks off dirt after a walk, and airing them out keeps them fresh and extends their life.

Allbirds FAQ

What’s the difference between the Tree Dasher and the Tree Runner?

The Tree Dasher is a running shoe (one-piece upper, dual-density midsole, 7mm drop, around $140). The Tree Runner is a casual everyday shoe (lighter, 15mm drop, around $100). Get the Dasher if you run; get the Tree Runner for daily wear.

Can you run in Allbirds Tree Runners?

You can for short, casual distances, but the Tree Runner wasn’t designed for running. For real runs, the Tree Dasher is the right Allbirds pick.

Are Allbirds good everyday shoes?

Yes. They’re lightweight, very comfortable, and machine washable, which makes them easy to live in day to day.

Are Allbirds good quality?

Yes. We’ve had Allbirds last for years through multiple washes and still look and feel good. The tree shoes tend to hold their shape a little better than the wool ones over time.

Did Allbirds rename the Tree Dasher?

Allbirds now sells its running shoe simply as the “Dasher,” and the casual sneaker shows up as the “Tree Runner NZ.” Same shoes, updated names, so don’t be thrown if the old name isn’t on the product page.
